Switching your cat to natural litter

A lot of people ask me if it's okay to switch your cat's litter cold turkey. The safe answer to this question is no. Most kitties are pretty particular about their "bathroom" habits - just look at the way they immediately start cleaning themselves after using the litter box - so you'll want to ease them into the new litter routine. If you have a small amount of unused litter from the old brand you were using, great! Save it to sprinkle on top of the new natural litter you are trying to switch your cat to. If you don't have any unused litter from the old brand, scoop out any waste that's currently in the box and then dump the relatively clean litter that's left into a large bag.

Next step, clean out the litter box to give your new litter a fresh start and then fill it with the natural brand of your choice. Our favorite is appropriately named World's Best Cat Litter :o) It clumps great, absorbs odors, and is completely safe for the kitties.

Before you finish, make sure to sprinkle a little bit of the old litter on top of the new natural brand that you've chosen. If you sense hesitation from your cat, add a little bit more of the old litter until he or she feels comfortable getting in.

That's it! So while my answer isn't as easy as going cold turkey, it only takes a little bit of effort to help the kitties adjust so everyone can start enjoying the benefits of using natural litter:

Less dust - silica dust prevalent in clay-based litters may cause respiratory problems in both cats and their owners
Safer for kitties - will not obstruct or coat your cat's digestive system
    Biodegradable
